'I think of myself as a hands-on designer. For me make is integral to my design philosophy. It is crucial how a piece of clothing feels when worn. I’ve always wanted clothes to be the way I drew them – relaxed and lived in, a natural look. I find men’s clothes interesting in their structure, feel and functionality. I started by designing men’s clothes, and then found that women wanted them.
I’m inspired by the authenticity I can find in nature, people and places, and I think it is the same quality I look for in the materials I choose. For example, the feel of hand-woven Harris tweed and the irregular slub of Irish linen. I feel passionate about landscape, and its connection with such fabrics and the skilled people who weave them.

On m'a souvent posé des questions sur mon travail au fil des ans. Et si certaines questions sont faciles à répondre, d'autres - en particulier celles qui concernent l'inspiration - peuvent être très difficiles. Mon travail est à la fois personnel et professionnel. L'inspiration est la clé, mais elle prend de nombreuses formes : un souvenir, une personne, le toucher d'un tissu, l'endroit où il est fabriqué, ainsi qu'une image dans mon esprit. Il s'agit donc en grande partie d'une intuition et d'un sentiment de ce qui est juste à un moment donné. Réaliser que l'inspiration est le travail.
Ces choses sont difficiles à exprimer, c'est pourquoi Emily et moi avons réalisé ce film. Il revient sur mes débuts et sur les personnes, les lieux, les métiers et les images qui comptaient tant pour moi à l'époque, et qui comptent toujours. J'espère qu'il transmettra ce qui a toujours compté pour moi en tant que designer..'
